
It seems our friends at the Mayo clinic have published a solid study in this months Anesthesiology highlighting cardiac outcomes after elective surgery following coronary stenting (both bare metal and drug-eluting). Abstracts here and here.
They concluded that elective surgery should be delayed for 90 days following placement of a bare-metal coronary stent and for more than a year when a drug-eluting device is used. Seem counterintuitive?
Drug-eluting stents reduce the rates of repeat target vessel revascularization or coronary artery bypass grafting surgery. DESs effectively reduce neointimal proliferation and rates of angiographic restenosis; however, the same drugs delay stent endothelialization, thus potentially prolonging the period where the DES is at higher risk for stent thrombosis
