Once Again Our Future Hangs in the Balance

We at TAB have tried to keep our minds open regarding the proposed changes to our health care system as we know it. It is a difficult thing to do with our livelihood so intertwined with the outcome. So instead of submitting yet another proposal that will never make it through the political washing machine, we've decided to sum up the best of whats out there:

  • ASA position letter here. In summary: No to public option based on current Medicare rates. Anesthesia reimbursements would be painfully low if this goes through. Does anyone really think there would be any private insurance industry if this happens? Not us.
  • AMA's Six Principles here.
  • Some other articles that have helped shape my opinion on the debate include Atul Gawande's New Yorker article, NY Times has a pretty decent section here.
All in all I think we all know change is-a-comin' and none too soon. My personal plan involves taxing cigarettes, alcohol, fast-food and not exercising. I'd also revamp ICU and end-of-life care and teach Americans how to die gracefully.

Opinions? Please share.

I would add a tax for Motorcycle manufacturers and riders, and well as gun owners and manufacturers. You want controversy? Make gun control a public health issure rather than a constitutional issue. That will stir up a hornet's nest!
