Recalls, Shortages and Other Annoyances

Drug shortages, recalls and the like are not always bad. In fact, part of the anesthesia training process was to create artificial shortages so we learned how to improvise under various scenarios and use drugs we weren’t used to using.
That was all well and good for training in anesthesia but when a drug or device is clearly superior, a shortage can be not only irritating but downright bad care. I personally don’t want a pacemaker from the 1970′s do you? Propofol, in my humble opinion, is just that sort of drug:
Both TEVA and Hospira have announced shortages due to contamination with endotoxin and/pr particulate matter:
Using the propfol substitutes is kind of like dribbling a basketball with your non-dominant hand, it can be done but it just ain’t as pretty. Feel free to cut and paste the following letter to TEVA and Hospira:
